Vehicle or Property Gifts --Civilian.

While state policy prohibits most direct property gifts to Valley Voice, you can still help Valley Voice by giving to our booster organization, Valley Voice Friends ---which can sell the item/s for the benefit of Valley Voice. Valley Voice Friends is one of the few charities actively seeking property gifts.

Vehicles of any type (land, air, sea, large, small) are welcome (if they are in sound condition and --preferably-- under ten years old). We reserve the right to decline accepting any vehicle, especially if it has major mechanical defects or other serious resale obstacles. Abandoning vehicles (etc) is not allowed; there is a form you must fill out (click here) and a procedure we must go through before we can authorize final acceptance.

Buildings and real estate are welcome, but we reserve the right to decline real properties, especially those with defects or obstacles to rapid resale. There is a form you must fill out (click here) and a procedure we must go through before we can authorize final acceptance.

Personal property (Antiques, Jewelry, Historic Items, Art, Autographs, Minerals, Collections, Militaria, Celebrity Items, etc.) are welcome. Items small enough to be boxed can be mailed to: VALLEY VOICE FRIENDS, c/o MR WARD, POB 1292, HARRISONBURG, VA 22803-1292. If your item is too big send in a box, you can't just leave a Chippendale highboy or Great Grandpa's Army Box in our lobby and run. Please fill out our form (click here); there is a procedure we must go through before we can authorize final acceptance. We reserve the right to say "no, thank you".

If you want to use your gift towards tax-deduction, you might be able to deduct the Fair Market Value, the Basis, or some other amount depending on circumstances. Check with your tax advisor. For high-value items, the IRS usually requires you to get a written appraisal from a third-party (not a relative or employee of yours). The IRS has a special form for this purpose. The "expert" "third party" advice in price guide books might qualify, but we're not sure; check with your tax advisor. Any doubts about anything --check with your tax advisor.

Property or Vehicle Gifts --Industrial, etc.

Often businesses will have depreciated assets, surplus items, vehicles, and equipment which they no longer consider useful. Frequently it can benefit a business (sometimes thousands of dollars worth) to donate the item/s to charity and take tax writeoffs.

Valley Voice Friends is one of the few charities able to accept (and actively seeking) property donations including industrial vehicles, factory surplus, buildings, excess business inventory, --whatever. Even aircraft, ships, railroad cars, bulldozers, cranes, and quarry vehicles will be considered.

Of course, you cannot just beach a semitrailer, company jet, or 20,000 surplus socks in our parking lot. There is a form you must fill out (click here) and a procedure we must go through before we can authorize final acceptance. We reserve the right to decline any offer.

For high-value items, the IRS usually requires you to get a written appraisal from a third-party (not a relative or employee of yours). The IRS has a special form for this purpose. It can't be said often enough: check with your tax advisor.

Stocks, Bonds, Paper Assets.

When some stocks and other paper assets perform well, a new concern can appear: Capital Gains Taxes. Sometimes selling off your stock can lead to a massive tax bill. More and more people are turning to charitable giving as a way to avoid the Capital Gains Taxes. Valley Voice would be happy to accept most appreciated stocks (or even some un-appreciated assets).

An important note: your stock almost always must be donated unsold/"not-cashed in" to escape the Capital Gains Taxes. Giving portions of the assets to charity after having cashed in the assets yourself can sometimes erase your tax advantages (at least in the case of Capital Gains). If you mean to seek a tax-deduction, the rules are complex --but not unmanageable. You will need to discuss your plans with your tax advisor.

Please tell us much detail as possible about your plans and about the asset/s you wish to donate (quantity, value, etc). We'll be in touch. Together we can maximize the benefit for you (and your heirs, etc) and for your charitable wishes. You can click here for the Contacting Us page.

Estates, Trusts.

After you take care of your family, what else will you do with your will? What will be your legacy? You can serve the community by adding non-profit organizations like Valley Voice to your list of beneficiaries. Estate gifts are the backbone of some charities' budgets.

Unless you think ahead, in some cases the IRS (thru various Estate Taxes) can consume half of your remaining lifetime assets. You can avoid some (or sometimes, a lot) of the tax bill by adding a properly-planned living trust, charatable remainder trust, or other tool to your will. The rules are complex. You will need to discuss your plans with your tax advisor. You might decide that the tax savings would be worth the time and set-up fees that an estate tool would entail. If you have questions for us (or if you'd like to tell us that you're remembering Valley Voice in your estate) you can click here for the Contacting Us page.

Limits: Many businesses view messages of this type as an advertising "media buy", though there are differences.

Messages may NOT include:
- Prices (including the word free).
- Calls to Action ("go here", "do this", "call now").
- Jingles.
- Quality judgments ("the best", "number one").**

**However, phases like "fine dining", "precision machining", or "strategic planning" (phrases which describe the kind of service, not the quality of it) are sometimes acceptable.

Even with such limits, there are many ways to tell our audience about you. Our audience is loyal, and they listen for long periods of time. much more time is needed to hear a newspaper than to listen to a song. People with limited vision (mostly elderly retirees) and also visiting caregivers and family members could hear your messages. Valley Voice reserves the right to edit messages to fit time and content restrictions. Maximum length: 30 seconds. These messages are broadcast on the Valley Voice's Cable-TV and Subcarrier Band signals only.

Office Supplies, etc.

Writing a check is the best way to support a charity, but every gift helps. A few ideas:

We appreciate Gift Cards from Office Max, Staples, Kinkos, Lowes, Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, Circuit City, Pier-1, Dollar Tree, the US Postal Service, and other retailers.

Giving quantities of Xerox paper, blank CD-R's or CD-RW's, postage stamps, 35mm film, etc, can help us trim our expenses. Current working computers, printers, scanners, and parts are welcome.

Giving boxes of printable T-shirts or mugs can help us promote an event. For that matter, we can really promote an event if you can get some of your company's advertising budget sent our way.

Gift Certificates from restaurants can help us thank special volunteers or feed those helping at an event. Donating venue costs and catering can let us put on an event to raise awareness or recruit volunteers, donors, etc.

Other ideas, questions, comments? You can click here for the Contacting Us page.

Proceeds from Events, etc.

Some organizations have Service Project requirements which require raising funds for a good cause. Please add Valley Voice to your list worthies. If you like, we can broadcast on-air "thank you" messages or spread the word about your organization; see the Advertise With Us section of this page for some sample scripts (click here).

Our thanks to recent Service Project givers including:

  • Children's camp of Pine Creek Church of the Brethren.
  • JMU Greek Week Coordinating Committee of 2001.
  • Lions Club group activity.
  • Rotary Club group activity.

Certainly also we welcome portions of proceeds from commercial events. Performers or promoters with "five percent for good" or "we care so give a share" policies are welcome. Authors, painters, jewelers, and other creative artists might share some of a work's proceeds. If you have questions for us (or if you'd like to tell us that you're thinking about sending some support) you can click here for the Contacting Us page.

Matching Gifts.

You might be able to double the power of your contribution by using your employer's money. Some companies match half-to-one, one-to-one, two-to-one, or more. In other words, you donate $50, prompting the company (doing a one-to-one match) to give $50; Valley Voice receives a total of $100. Retirees, directors, board members, and current employees are often eligible at participating companies. As corporations merge and rearrange themselves, some retirees from formerly non-participating companies find themselves newly-eligible. Ask the personnel / human resources staff whether your company matches employee gifts to charity. Corporations matching gifts to Public Broadcasting or to Educational Entities are very likely to match your gift to Valley Voice. You can ask us for a list of participating companies; for the Contacting Us page, click here.

Tax Info.

Fully Deductible.
Donations to the Valley Voice or Valley Voice Friends are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. Both are tax-exempt non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations. As with donations to any charity, the "extent", above, depends on the kind of gift you're making. Some casual advice of a general nature follows, but please do not consider it official in any way. Neither Valley Voice or Valley Voice Friends has tax advisors in the workforce. Please check with your own tax advisor.

Income Tax.
Income tax deductions follow the typical rules: you probably must Itemize, and the "long form" might be involved. You might need to give enough to charities or otherwise reduce income to reach a Standard Deduction level before deductions may apply. If you're going to give a large gift and tax-deductibility is important to you, discuss the matter with your tax advisor.

Estate Tax.
Estate tax can severely hurt your plans for your heirs and your community. In the words of one financial consultant:

This is blunt. Like it or not, if you have an estate of significant worth, you will be a philanthropist --you will give to charity at estate time. Taxes have carved fifty percent out of many estates we know of. The IRS will take a large amount of your life earnings and keep it out of your kids' and grandkids' hands and send it to Washington for its own idea of "good causes." You might prefer to give to your own church or temple, your own chosen local charities, your own family. Instead the IRS will do good works --or maybe works you don't agree with-- in other states with a LOT of your legacy unless you plan things in advance.

We presume that you'd prefer to keep your legacy close to home, supporting things that YOU value. Of course we hope that you will consider helping the the Valley Voice or Valley Voice Friends. Whether or not you come to our aid, we hope you will better serve your family and local community by planning ahead. It involves more than thought or good wishes: there are specific documents and declarations required in order to eliminate many of the taxes on large estates. There are financial planning tools with names like Charitable Remainder Trusts, Life Trusts, and others. Consult your tax advisor. The details can be complex and beyond the scope of non-experts. The reward is emotionally-priceless: knowing that your legacy can be as large as possible and will be under your own control.

Capital Gains Tax.
When some stocks and other paper assets perform well, a new concern can appear: Capital Gains Taxes. Sometimes selling off your stock can lead to a massive tax bill. Sometimes, charitable giving can help you avoid Capital Gains Taxes, but the rules are complex. For instance, usually stocks must be donated unsold / "not cashed-in". Giving portions of the assets to charity after cashing in the assets yourself often erases your tax advantages (at least in the case of Capital Gains). If you mean to seek a tax-deduction, consult your tax advisor.

"Advertising" / Underwriting.
You are welcome to "advertise" your company on our airwaves and reach an audience who will appreciate your generosity. We will thank you on-air and describe your services. This form of "advertising" is fully tax-deductible.

Property Gifts.
You might be able to deduct the Fair Market Value, the Basis, or some other amount depending on circumstances. Check with your tax advisor. For high-value items, the IRS usually requires you to get a written appraisal from a third-party (not a relative or employee of yours). The IRS has a special form for this purpose.

Federal ID / "Tax Number" / EIN.
